Geneva Accords divide Vietnam.
July 20, 1954
The resolution divides Vietnam into north and south entities, pending the political settlement of a national election. While the U.S. does not accept the agreement, it does not object, declaring it would view renewed aggression with concern. South Vietnamese Prime minister Ngo Dien Diem defeats Bao Dai in national referendum and proclaims Republic of Vietnam with himself as president on October 23, 1954.
